DIPHTHONG AND TRIPHTHONG




           DIPHTHONG: a vowel sound, occuping a single syllable during the articulation of which a vowel sound, occupying a single syllable, during the articulation of which the tongue moves from one position to another, causing a continual change in vowel quality, as in the pronunciation of a in english late, during which the tongue  moves  from the position of (e) towards (I).

PROPER DIPHTHONG: A coalition or union of two vowel sounds pronounced in one syllable; as, ou in out, oi in noise; -- called a {proper diphthong}.

IMPROPER DIPHTHONG: A vowel digraph; a union of two vowels in the same syllable, only one of them being sounded; as, ai in rain, eo in people; -- called an {improper diphthong}.

TRIPHTHONGS: A compound vowel sound resulting from the succession of three simple ones and functioning as a unit, a composite vowel sound during the articulation of which the vocal organs move from one position through a second, ending in a third.
